Your Dietitian Answers: Celiac Symptoms Check List

Have you ever wondered if you have Celiac Disease? If you have come to visit my site, you may have. I often get the question, “Do I have Celiac?” from friends, family, and clients. …and so begins the symptoms talk. The following information is to get the ball rolling in the direction of proper testing. This blog is not intended for diagnosis, but for “research” before you visit your doctor.

Celiac disease can make itself know in many different ways. Some people who have Celiac Disease may experience one, two, three, or most of these symptoms. It is amazing what happens when I present this list to my clients. The client either says, I have one, let’s say heartburn, and are convinced that testing is a waste of time and money, and come back positive for Celiac Disease. Or, a client my have most of these symptoms and are convinced they are a celiac and come back testing negative for Celiac Disease, but have a wheat allergy. Proper testing is key to an accurate diagnosis. The following list is not an exhausted list as we are finding new symptoms come up frequently.

Possible Symptoms to Celiac Disease

Here is a check list of sorts for you to review for your “research”.

Diarrhea
Constipation
Irregular Diarrhea and Constipation
Abdominal Bloating and Gas
Heartburn {Indigestion/reflux}
Migraine Headaches
Depression
Infertility
Irregular Menstrual Cycles
Recurrent Miscarriages
Lactose Intolerance
Nausea and/or Vomiting
Chronic Fatigue and Weakness
Mouth Ulcers
Easy Bruising of the Skin
Tingling {in hands and feet}
Bone/Joint Pain
Mouth Ulcers

Labs results can show:

Elevated Liver Enzymes
Iron, Folate, and/or Vitamin B12 Deficiency
A, D, E, K, and Calcium Deficiency

In Children symptoms can be revealed as:

Delayed Puberty
Dental and Enamel abnormalities
Concentration and learning difficulties
Irritability and Behavior Changes
Failure to Thrive
